Star anise (also known as star anise or octagonal anise) is a valuable spice and herb, characterized by its distinctive eight-pointed star shape and strong aroma.
1. Natural Characteristics
- Star Anise Tree: A woody plant, 2-6 meters tall, evergreen. In Vietnam, star anise is most widely grown in Lang Son.
- Fruit (Flower): The part used as a spice is actually the fruit of the tree, which shrinks into a star shape when dried, with each point containing a small, glossy brown seed.
2. Notable Uses
In Cuisine:
- It is the main ingredient in five-spice powder.
- It creates a distinctive flavor for dishes such as pho, curry, beef stew, or other stews and stir-fries.
- It is used in baking, jam making, and marinating food to remove fishy odors.
In Medicine & Health:
- Supports digestion: Helps reduce bloating, stomach pain, and stimulates appetite.
- Respiratory System: Reduces coughs, loosens phlegm, and supports the treatment of colds. Anti-inflammatory & antibacterial: Contains powerful antioxidant compounds that help boost the immune system.
- Pain relief: Used in herbal liniments to treat joint pain and back pain.
- Other uses: Star anise essential oil is used in the production of perfumes, soaps, or in scented sachets to deodorize and repel insects.
3. Common uses:
- Cooking: Add 1-2 star anise pods to broth or roast them before marinating.
- Star anise tea: Steep dried star anise in hot water to drink for relaxation and improved digestion.
- Alcohol tincture: Soak dried star anise in white wine to massage painful areas.
